Our firm was founded in 1992 by Edward F. McHale, a skilled federal litigator with extensive courtroom experience as a patent litigator and former major crimes prosecutor with the Dade County State Attorney’s Office, and Michael A. Slavin, an accomplished patent attorney, engineer and manager with broad technical and legal expertise. The merger of their talents has built a firm with a unique expertise in both prosecution and litigation.
In addition to our domestic expertise, we bring an international perspective with a particular insight into intellectual property law as it evolves throughout the world. The firm maintains relationships with foreign affiliates in all geographic regions worldwide. In addition to U.S. based clients, we have many international clients.

We have an active petitions and appeals practice. Our expertise also includes all aspects of trademark and copyright prosecution and litigation.
Our firm has an established litigation practice with attorneys experienced in complex federal litigation pertaining to all areas of intellectual property litigation. The firm also provides SEC support, infringement opinions, and corporate intellectual property audits. We represent clients during administrative oppositions and appeals, providing the high level of intellectual property support necessary for publicly and privately held companies as well as entrepreneurial start-ups. We are experienced in assisting our clients in developing an overall strategy for their patent portfolios.
In addition to our domestic and worldwide presence, the McHale | Slavin headquarters is centrally located in the heart of Florida’s biotech corridor. We are committed to advancing the Palm Beach County region as a center for biotechnology, life sciences and medical research and development.
